- Description
- This creative work explores the compositions and relations with society of a number of composers, of professional and amateur status, in the 1870s in the Newcastle region of New South Wales. From the evidence of primary sources, the composers were integral to music-making in Newcastle and its colliery townships. They performed, led ensembles, composed and arranged music. In the 1870s music provided the communities with recreation, individual and community purpose and a sense of identity. It shaped and modulated social spaces, framed official proceedings and heralded events. It brought a sense of pride, a means to earn or raise money and conveyed status. The individuals who contributed to the web of activities that made up those communities’ world have been forgotten. Only a few printed scores have survived to give us an idea of their achievement and voices. For this creative work, surviving scores were recorded and, together with readings from the local newspapers of the period and keynote sounds, a soundscape was created. In the performance a second layer was mapped onto this, consisting of the live performance of extracts from the same works. The creative work utilises a number of techniques to create the effects of movement, distance, time past and memory. These are: being slightly out of synchronisation, thereby creating the effect of blurring. This suggests the past and memories. Panning is used to create the effect of movement and time passing. Reverberation is used also to suggest distance and the past. The Creative Work was a pre-recorded soundscape, overlaid with a live performance.
